Loft in the Red Zone: Artist Commemorate 9/11
Bulls I 2002, duraclear print mounted on plexi, 30 x 40
At the time of 9/11 I was in Germany. It was 2 day after my exhibition opened.
It was very difficult for me to be away since I was not able to be of help to others in the immediate aftermath.
On my return, which was 2 1/2 weeks later, I arrived back into the city, which was drastically different then when I left. The feelings of loss and grief permeated the city, where I had felt safe and protected prior to my departure. The city was not the same and neither was anyone else in our country.
It had a big impact on me. The delusion "we are safe and protected in NYC" was just that, a "delusion", and a false belief.
People came together and there was a feeling of comradeship, something that was very much needed.
Soon after my return I created two pieces, one called Infinity and the other Peace. Infinity has a pathway to eternity with multiply androgynous heads, representing all that had died in the attack and aftermath. Peace speaks of staying mindful of what is needed to have harmony in the world. I then created the two Bulls I pieces (the duraclear print and wall sculpture being exhibited in Loft in the Red Zone). This is a reminder that we all can be target of hatred and intolerance.
Self Portrait, a resin cast head, double sided pupils and shattered glass, is void of all individual identity the head become a metaphor for humanity in all its suffering and revelry; an evocation of the virtues of humility and altruism.
As an artist, the act of creation is an act against destruction and that was one of my intentions I kept in mind as I created the works influenced by the attack of 9/11.
